Five Tips for a Cleaner Home

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Cleaning, DIY Projects

I’m partnering with O-Cedar to bring you five tips for a cleaner home, starting with your floors.  I already owned their mop before this collaboration, and I knew how well it works!  Achieving a clean home with kids can be hard, so these are realistic solutions for busy families.

 a Rafflecopter giveaway

TIP 1: CREATE A SHOE-DROP ZONE

I genuinely clean my home 50% less by having a no-shoe policy indoors. Think about all the dirt and dust you track inside by wearing your shoes around the home.  For cleanliness sake it’s important, but just think of all the TIME you spend cleaning.  Yeah, I’m cool with cleaning less!  Having a designated shoe mat will help hold you to this policy (and remind guests without you having to).  If you live in a cold climate, keep some dollar store socks on hand for guests who want to keep their feet warm.

TIP 2:  EMBRACE THE VACUUM

Or at a minimum the hose extension.  I really don’t sweep much.  I just vacuum my floors, under the table, and even right on the table for crumby messes.  It’s fast.  It’s easy.  And it WORKS. Check out this article https://cleanhomeguide.co.uk/best-shark-vacuum/ for reviews on some of the best shark vacuums. I fully recommend a cordless vacuum cleaner such as the Eufy Homevac for cleaning the house, as it’s just super simple and easy to use. If you don’t have one, check out these ones recommended by Appliance Hunter.

TIP 3:  GET A SPIN MOP

We love our O-Cedar Easy Wring Spin Mop and Bucket System.  I picked mine up on Walmart when my previous mop kicked the bucket.  It’s awesome because you don’t have to bend to use it, you can control the amount of water that goes on the floor (perfect for wood floors), and it’s FAST.  Like really fast.  Plus no streaks.  I paid for it using my own money, so when the brand reached out and wanted to partner with me AND give 6 mops away (see above), I jumped at the chance!

TIP 4: MAKE YOUR OWN FLOOR CLEANER

To clean my floors I use a 1:4 ration of distilled white vinegar to water with just a few drops of dish soap.  It’s worked super well for us and is all natural!

TIP 5: REFRESH YOUR CARPETS

Sprinkle baking soda on your carpets.  Let sit for 20 minutes and vacuum up.  This makes your carpet soft and plush again, plus your home will smell amazing!

How do you keep your floors clean?  Leave a comment below!

Hey Kathryn, I’m Ruth from Melbourne. I love all of your videos. I look forward to watching new ones always and in the meantime get hooked on to the old ones 😉 I’ve honestly learnt a lot and it has helped me to stay organised. We have hardwood floors and we don’t have a vacuum cleaner so I just sweep up all the dust off the floor followed by a mop with a dash of vinegar and dish soap in hot water. I do it twice a week and this keeps my house in good shape 🙂 Keep up your good work. I’d posted a comment long time back but for some reason it didn’t appear here, hopefully this one will. Say hi to your family for me. Take care and God bless!

I will try the spin mop. Looks like fun. I also use the vacuum instead of sweeping. Works great. Can’t beat white vinegar with a couple drops of organic dish soap. The one tip I can’t use is taking the shoes off. We are in and out of our house constantly. I just can’t see having to untie and take shoes off every few minutes.

I have the O’Cedar broom and dust pan for sweeping. Then I have a rainbow for deep cleaning. That gets all the dust in the places the broom can not get to. It loosens anything stuck to the floor. For moping I have a swiffer wet jet. The solution is empty I am looking to replace it. I plan to look into buying one of those O’Cedar mops.

    Hi Kathryn,
Love your videos. They are so helpful and easy to implement which is what I like the best. One thing I know about myself is if something is easy to carry out I am more likely to do it and stick to it. So thanks for all the tips that make my life more organizer without spending a lot. by the way I can’t find half of the things you fine at your dollar tree. Do you have any tips for locating them in my area. I am in Maryland and we have a lot of dollar trees but so far not much luck.

I struggle to find things sometimes, too. The main key is timing with when your store gets its inventory. Call to ask them!

Did you know you can order from the Dollar Tree online? It’s not fast… They will deliver to your local store, not your home, and it can take a couple weeks. Also, they will notify you when the truck is loaded, but they won’t get to the store for a while, so call the store to confirm before making the trip to pick up your order.

By ordering online, I was able to get some drawer organizers that Kathryn had featured, in sizes that were not on the store shelves.

      Good luck!

Hi, I have a steam mop and it works really good but at least once a month I like to use some good ol’ soap and water on my floor. I have seen this mop set before and wondered how well it worked. I have tile in my kitchen and my sponge mop seems to soak the floor and it takes forever to dry. I like the idea that you can spin the mop practically dry. I’m disabled with back problems also so not bending over the bucket is another selling point.Love your videos I learn alot from you!!!

Excellent tips, Kathryn! Being my mother is Japanese ( and father is Irish ) , I was raised to remove my shoes before entering a home.

After starting our own family my husbands father was not receptive to the idea and refused, saying he “would be #@^ if he had to take off his shoes”.
🙁 Anybody else ever run into this in their home?

This worked okay for us when I worked full-time outside the home and had little time. Now I need something more economical and want something more natural. Hi,

To start with I “LOVE” your tips so simple, easy to follow and quick. I would really like to have this mop moreover the spin bucket as it will save my palms and arms from the pain of putting pressure to get out maximum water. My skin is sensitive and usually end up with red palms and some days skin peels off too..so i would really love to win this.

Thank you for the five tips to a cleaner home~ I’ve been cleaning my floors with vinegar and dish soap and noticed the difference ~ I would love the OCEDAR mop bucket set~ because my mop keeps breaking and I just rinse it in a bathroom garbage can and use the bathtub to get it cleaned up with my power massage shower that sometimes if I let go of the handle I end up showered on LOL?

    Hi Kathryn,
Long time subscriber here- love your videos. I have solid hardwood throughout an older home, which I love but are challenging to clean. I’ve used swiffer but it seems like you need to scrub more than you should, I think a spin mop would be much better for that reason!
    Take care!

Great tips Kathryn! I loved that mop and was wondering how well they rung out so I was happy to see you talk about it. I just had family and friends help replace my flooring with Pergo EX laminate flooring and boy do I ever love them! But I wanted a way to clean them easier and this mop looks awesome. I have two furbabies running around, a German Shepherd puppy and a 10 year old Jack Russell. These floors are so durable and are holding up so well to the dogs nails and playing. They had a newer Pergo flooring out that will be replacing the others and that was very nice in that you could wet mop it. So it could handle the water really well. Mine is a step down from it, but even mind handles water. I have it in my kitchen too and it is working out well in there too. Now I can’t wait to go to Wal Mart and seeing if I can get this mop, if not I will be ordering on Amazon. Thanks for all you do Kathryn!! Hugs, Brenda

The only reason I have a keep your shoes on is because the doctors I worked for said shoes protected feet from foot problems like athletes foot or anything else my guests may have brought in. Socks do not protect the various bacteria from transferring to your rug. I also do not know how the needle traveled from my sewing room to my living room rug. The ER was no fun nor could they tell if they got it all wo xray. Fortunately it came out in one piece or the surgery would have been costly. My door knows I wash his feet when he comes in from a walk and has perfected the wiggle, squirm. sort of fall from your arms technique which defeats the purpose. His feet get cleaned but not before the rug gets hit. Me and mine transfer our shoes to slippers at the doors but my guests must always wear shoes and the dog? I am still trying. appreciate all you share. appreciate you and yours.

Love your videos! I’m a baking soda in a parm container/ EO/ vinegar user too!! We have a no shoe rule as well, except when guests are over. If they choose to take shoes off, great, but if not, that’s ok too …I’ll just clean the floor when they’re gone. 🙂 I have used a Rubbermaid wet mop for years with homemade vinegar, essential oil & distilled water to clean my bamboo floors. I love the solution and the ease of the mop, but the refillable bottle is misshapen and can be a challenge. Would love to try the O-Cedar mop!! It looks like it might work fabulously!

Something so simple as taking off your shoes at the door. Last year I got diagnosed with allergies and asthma and need to keep the dust at bay. My husband wears the big, bulky tie up boots for work. He spends so much time going in and out when at home. I’d love to come up with a solution for him. I wouldn’t want to keep taking my boots off and putting them back on several times a night. However, I could sweep and swiffer twice a day and still see dust. I don’t…but I could.

I’ves been using the vacuum hose for years. I actually add the upholstery tool, he one with the little brush all the way around. Not only does it not scratch, but it gives you a little more surface to vacuum with. It is great as it catches dog hair too. I just rinse under hot water and air dry as needed. Give it a try!
