Dollar Tree Gardening

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Dollar Tree

Since you asked, here it is!  Take a tour around Dollar Tree with me and see my favorite products for gardening (and what I would stay away from).  I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the options this year.

A personal favorite for me are the hanging baskets.  $2 for a gorgeous look that is easily $15 somewhere else!

Enjoy!

Secret to Diaper Bag Organization! | What’s in my diaper bag?

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Advice & Vlogs

As a mom of an almost 2-year-old, I finally feel like I know what I’m doing.  Yup.  I’m unashamed to say that it took me two years to understand balance.  I know what I need, and I know how to keep it (mostly) organized.  I say “mostly”, and if you have kids, I need not explain further. 😉

My diaper bag and organizers are right around $60.  Which, as far as diaper bags go, is actually really inexpensive.  If you buy a regular old cheap diaper bag from Babies R Us (no internal organization), it will run you $80-$100.  No joke.

I LOVE my diaper bag from Thirty One.  It’s sort of like Mary Kay (there are consultants all over that sell them, so find a friend to support if you can!  I am not a rep).  But you can also find them on Amazon.  This is my diaper bag on sale because it is the older model.  The also LOVE my mesh file system and our suction place-mat.  Those are two keys that we definitely couldn’t live without.  Here’s what I do  Would love to hear what you do!

Dollar Tree Decor | Pottery Barn Dupes

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Decor & Furniture, DIY Projects, Dollar Tree, Money Saving

Is anyone else as obsessed with Pottery Barn as I am?  They have such classic, timeless decor and such exquisite presentation.  My catalogs have drool on them.  But overpriced stuff just isn’t my jam.  I just “shop” inspiration.  It’s free after all 😉  Besides, getting the high-end look for less gives me a high.  Charlie laughs at me, because I’m easily over-excited by super glue and jute twine.  It’s sort of a problem.

Here is one of the looks I was wanting to recreate.  My favorite of all is this Egan Paneled Mirror that retails for $300.

The re-creation of this look has been floating around Pinterest for a while, and many versions involve particle board.  But that’s a lot of work (and requires tools I don’t know how to use), so I knew that with some creative thinking I could make it happen completely from Dollar Tree.  As in, no product from any other store…and I succeeded.  You can literally create a $300 mirror for just $12!

Keeping an organized closet seems to be something that so many women I know struggle with.  I’m definitely not perfect, but these are some systems that truly help me keep my closet purged and organized.  I hope you enjoy.

$10 Toddler Learning Center

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Organization, Teaching

Creating a functional and learning-centered area of our home for Carson was a must for me this month.  He’s showing so much interest in coloring, drawing, and creating.  My budget was small, though.  I didn’t have much to spend, but I love how this space is maximized.

I thrifted the desk but you can also find it here if you are looking for one (they are not expensive).  You can also find the cutting board organizer here.  You can find a similar storage ottoman here.

Toy & Playroom Organization

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: DIY Projects, Organization, Teaching

Toys.  Everywhere.  When you have kids it’s the truth!

There are a few things that we do to cut down on toy clutter throughout our home, and I hope that these tips are helpful to you!  This is part of a collab video with Jady A and OrganizedClutterbug!

1) GET AN ORGANIZING SYSTEM…YOU REALLY CAN SCORE THIS FOR UNDER $60!  I love these organizing cubbies to store toys in the playroom paired with canvas totes.

2) LIMIT THE NUMBER OF TOYS your child has access to.  Sometimes, we live under the mentality that more is more, and our kids seem to tire of toys easily.  I find that when they have less options (that are rotated out) they do worlds better!  Store them in sets that are easily put away.  Plus, with less, you can clean up faster.  We love the chalkboard labels from Michaels and chalk pens.

3)  STORE YOUR PUZZLES (or items with loose pieces) IN PENCIL POUCHES.  You will love this.  They are virtually indestructible and save so much space.
4)  HAVE AN ALWAYS-OUT BASKET TO PLACE NOT-IN-USE TOYS.  This way you are constantly purging and only the toys that your child likes will stay out.

5) GET CREATIVE.  I made a DIY lazy susan for Carson’s art supplies using a cheese platter (and I turned the table into a chalk table!).  You can see more on that here.

6)  MAKE USE OF HIDDEN STORAGE AROUND YOUR HOME.  We use everything from large tote baskets, small burlap baskets (with cute labels) and storage ottomans that can serve a dual purpose to store toys.

7)  STORE TOYS IN BOOKSHELVES.  If you can stand to part with a few books, move up the bottom rung of your bookshelf and put in canvas bins.

What do you do to tame the toy clutter?

Simple Square-Foot Gardening!

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Money Saving

I love gardening, and it really can save a lot of money. Added bonus: feeding your family fresh, healthy, organic food!

The “Bible” of the Square-Foot Method

The biggest keys to getting started with successful gardening are having a container/garden bed, knowing when/what to plant for your zone, and having the right soil composition. We use a space-saving method called Square-Foot Gardening because you can really control the soil and you can grow so much in such a little space. We wouldn’t do it any other way! If you’re looking for ways to decrease the space being used by your tools and furniture, you could store your garden furniture in a plastic container.

Before we started gardening, I was pretty intimidated by the whole thing, and quite honestly, the first year you garden, don’t expect it to be awesome. In fact, our first year I would have given us a C-. But the next year I think we earned a C+. By year 3, we were at a B+ garden. It didn’t help that we didn’t start with much, and but things definitely changed once we got a small greenhouse to help with our garden. Don’t be afraid to try out new techniques and new products (like these nutrients – https://agron.io/products/b-52) Experiment, learn and ask questions!

*I walk you through the first steps of gardening in this video so you can get set up with perfect soil.*

Here are some plants that we have had tons of success with in the square food method that are abundant producers. You don’t want to plant something that is only going to give you very little fruit, because the amount of time just isn’t worth the pay-out:

  • Zucchini (I would allot two plot for one plant. They get big, but you will be eating them all summer long)
  • Lettuce (Amazing producer, likes a little shade)
  • Cucumber
  • Cilantro
  • Parsley
  • Basil
  • Spinach
  • Green beans (we have had huge success with these!)
  • Eggplant
  • Peppers (green)
  • Tomatoes (all types, we love cherry tomatoes, need a trellis)
  • Raspberries (these bushes grow HUGE and often rogue. They are best planted in a larger area)
