What’s in Carson’s Easter Basket?

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Teaching

Every year I like to share a short clip about how we are celebrating Easter.  It’s a casual year at home (no travel thankfully!), and I spent under $15 on Carson’s basket.  I shopped primarily at Five Below and Dollar Tree for a few simple toys and learning activities I know he is going to love.

I was also really excited to use our Resurrection Eggs for the first time.  If you haven’t heard of these, they tell the Biblical story of Easter.  Kids find eggs and each one contains a small trinket about each part of the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ.

Take a look at our Easter celebration!

First Five Below Haul!

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Organization

I’d never been to a Five Below, and we had the grand opening of one in our area.  In fact, YOU, my subscribers and readers, were the first to tell me about this budget paradise!

If you aren’t familiar with this chain, ever item is $5 and under.  During my first shopping trip, I found lots of organizing tools that won’t break the bank.  While not everything is worth your time, there are a considerable amount of items that are well worth the price tag.  In fact, they are much cheaper than you would pay retail.  Five Below has lots to offer, so here’s my first haul and how I used the items to get organized.

VLOG | How to make slime!

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Advice & Vlogs, Teaching

Come spend the afternoon with us in this casual video and learn our favorite recipe for making slime with your kiddos (see below).  We head to the store and chat about great buys at Target and the Dollar Tree.  And new mascara.  You know, all the fun, girly things.

***Recipe for SLIME!***
1 cup white glue
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup hot water
1.5 to 2 Tablespoons Borax (found in the laundry aisle)
Food coloring (about 5 or 6 drops of green gives you the pretty turquoise color!)

Mix the water and food coloring. Pour over glue in a bowl. Stir. Add hot water and Borax. Stir and knead until it becomes slime. This will take about 10 minutes (or at least it did for us). It keeps absorbing more and more water until it is one mass!

Pottery Barn Decor from Dollar Store!

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: DIY Projects, Dollar Tree

I get fired up about an awesome DIY, but I simultaneously loathe the majority of “crafting.”  Often times, there are just too many steps to create something worthwhile.  And half the time I end up with a pin-fail.  #notwinning  So, here are four inexpensive DIYS (that you can complete in under 10 minutes) that ANYONE can do.  Even if you don’t have a crafty bone in your body.  And they will still look amazing.

First I show you how to make the “Eagan” mirror, from Pottery Barn that retails for $300 for less than $30.  Then we’ll walk through how to make a beautiful Kate Spade- inspired gold vase, create inexpensive flower arrangements and plants from the Dollar Tree, and finally, a DIY burlap wreath.  All of these simple DIYs are $10 and under.  Yay for that!

Looking for more?  Here are more Pottery Barn Dupes and how to make a mirror planter!

NURSERY CLOSET ORGANIZATION….on a budget!

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Money Saving, Organization

When baby #2 rolls around, you resolve to re-evaluate what actually worked.  Not what you thought would work on some idealistic planet (that you quickly discover does NOT exist!)  With our first, we learned a lot and we had so much success with this style of closet organization.  I knew I needed to implement it this go-around.  Ain’t nobody got extra time with two kids 😉

Here are my best secrets to organize a baby’s nursery closet on a budget!

  1. Get an OVER THE DOOR SHOE ORGANIZER.  These are LIFESAVERS in the closet as they create extra storage (especially for pacifiers and teethers).  You can’t mess this system up!
  2. Don’t go big or go home if you need a new closet organizing system.  You can purchase UNDER $100 CLOSET ORGANIZING SYSTEMS for a FRACTION of what you pay at more custom stores.  Install to the ceiling to maximize vertical space!  We purchased a system for a 3-6 foot closet.
  3. NURSERY CLOSET DIVIDERS are the BEST.  We keep the current size clothes and the next size up in the closet and divide them out so they are easy to find.
  4. Create a no-fold system!  We just use bins and throw stuff in.  Pants, blankets, burp cloths.  They stay organized without the hassle.  Trust me!  We got our bins at Aldi, but you can find similar options are the dollar store.
  5. Need more space?  Try undermount organizers for extra blankets or swaddlers.
  6. Store extra diapers and next size up clothes at the top of the closet.
  7. Keep a laundry basket in the closet for clothes that no longer fit.  As you notice an item is getting snug, toss it in– you are sorting and updating your closet as you go!
  8. Cube shelving units are PERFECT for small closets (and you can utilize bins on the top).   The best place to find these is Walmart.  We fill them with Dollar Tree bins and don’t fold anything.  Just toss in and you are on your way!
  9. Keep white onesies separate from the rest of your clothes.  This sounds insane, but it is really helpful.
  10. Keep toys on the bottom bins so they are easy to take out and later easy for your kids to put away.
  11. Utilize side walls with extra hooks and invest in a corner laundry organizer to maximize space (we got ours at Target for less than $20!)

I hope these ideas were helpful.  And I really hope they were simple….because having a kid sure isn’t 😉
