Organizing your car when going on road trips (with kids) can be a headache… or like you are about to walk into a battle-zone! Here are my favorite tips for keeping your car organized (all year long) and preparing for longer trips with kids!
- Hang a holiday bag on a command hook to create a no-shift garbage can! This is one of my favorite hacks.
- Organize your glove box using old CD cases and Dollar Tree plastic pouches. CD cases make a great mini-first-aid kit or a coloring kit for your kids.
- I love microfiber cloths (from Dollar Tree) for cleaning the inside of your car to keep it from getting dusty. A great investment for only a buck!
- Forget silicone cup liners, they are cumbersome. Even though it’s all over Pinterest…
- I LOVE this iPad holder and toy organizer for the back of the seat. It’s under $15 and is GREAT for kids on long car trips (plus there is a ton of space for toys!)
- Use over the door hooks from the dollar store to store umbrellas. They are also great for hanging diaper bags.
- Have a removable basket with a blanket, first aid kit, and a change of clothes. These are our most commonly needed items.
- Invest in a Shop Vac to clean the inside of your car. One of our home’s favorite investments!
- Use Dollar Tree bins to corral extra storage and misc. supplies on the floor
- Have a high quality cooler and pack food on the go (you will save a ton!). This is our favorite one.
- Keep “puke bags” and paper towels handy. Extra trash bags for dirty or soiled clothes. You will thank yourself later!
These are our favorite ways to travel organized and simply. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Hi Kathyrn,
Love the trash can idea! I used to have one that hung over my passenger seat that I got from target years ago….well, it died a slow painful death and needed to be thrown out last summer. There was no amount of washing that was going to get the old lollipop sticks goo, band-aides and banana peel pieces out so I have been looking everywhere for another one that wasn’t a million dollars. My son is autistic and likes structure and tells me constantly that we need a new trash can in our car. I will be doing this one today and I’m sure he will appreciate it.
His room is loaded with dollar tree bins too 🙂
The command hanger reminded me of a tip that my super organized mom showed me in the kitchen. She uses the same ones that you did for the trash can and puts them on the inside of some of her kitchen cabinets and hangs all her measuring spoons and measuring cups. It keeps them out of the way but also makes them easy to find. I have mine in my cabinet that happens to be right above my stove. I’ll send you a picture if you’d like to see what it looks like.
I really enjoy your blogs and have my homemade wipes in all my bathrooms and in my kitchen. My husband loves loves loves them!
Keep on posting!

Love that! What great ideas 🙂 Happy car trash can making, Alicia <3 Hehe!
I definitely pack food to eat on the way, and I usually travel by myself or with another adult. It helps with expenses and saves so much time. Thanks for the command hook garbage bag tip, I have found command hooks to be a wonderful resource for car organization. Your vlogs are great, Kathryn! I want to thank you for all your hard work and I wish you and your family a great Holiday season 🙂
Love the trash bag idea. Small enough to not be in the way and big enough to hold travel trash. We are headed to Alabama from Maryland to visit family for the holidays. Definitely going to use this idea. Thanks.
Awesome! Safe travels 🙂
Grate ideas.
