Are you a hoarder?

by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Organization

In this declutter vlog I share the 3 things that many people hold on to that they don’t actually need.  Why?  These items are so easy to accumulate and we feel wasteful getting rid of them.   But in reality, they are actually turning to clutter and making organizing our homes more difficult.  We save them because we think we need them, but we are in turn making spaces we could truly love a chaotic mess.  Happy spring cleaning and I hope you find the motivation you need to PURGE & DECLUTTER!!

I got rid of towels and comforters just before we moved last summer…what a load we “unloaded.” Something that helped us part with these items was being able to take them to our local animal shelter. They are always in need of gently used towels. And if you live in a cold area…they need the old comforters and blankets too. Help yourself AND help the animals!! Double win!

Yes, I was hoarding towels – everytime Kohls or Boston Store (in Wisconsin) had towels on sale, I’d buy them for my bathrooms….after all – I needed various colors for different times of the year, etc. This winter, I went through my towels, got about 1/2 out of my linen closet and the rest are being sold at my summer rummage sale – some brand new and are sets – bath towel, hand towel and face cloth. As for shoes, I went through them, as well – some brand new ones are also being sold at my rummage this summer. I’ve gotten hooked on sheet sets that are 800 or so threat count so bought 2 sets for our bed and that’s it. All other (like new or brand new) sheets that are 200 thread count are also being sold. I love your blog and although have been frugal most of my married life, I always learn something new from you. The Dollar Tree (we have several around my home) has now become my “new favorite store” – I have organized my laundry room cabinets, closets, kitchen cabinets (some) and linen closet with Dollar Tree’s colorful containers. Also, thanks for being the type of parents that raise your child (soon to be children) in the way of the Lord.

    Hi Kathryn,

You are so right about sheets, towels and comforters. I thinned out our towel supply late last year and will now concentrate on sheets and comforters. I’ve also noticed that I tend to hang onto old pillows. I don’t know why–I’ll never use them again!

I haven’t thought about the towel hording, but watching this I am thinking of many different places that I have towels stored. Different colors, oh my. Have to give this some thought. Space is always a problem for me as for all of us. I have been ill and have a vad back, but still am trying to get things done slowly.

    Thank you

Your videos/blogs are always such an inspiration. Your tips and organization always gives me new ideas for our home. Also don’t forget the local humane society. Ours is always happy to get donated towels for the pets. Thank you! God Bless

Can I make a suggestion? If you are getting rid of a bunch of towels, take the excess to your local animal shelter. They can always use towels. When I moved I did that!

I just went through our shoes, and towels but I’ve never had more than two sets of sheets. That said, I can’t seem to get rid of my old kitchen tea towels and wash cloths. I need to work on it. I actually have kitchen wash clothes with holes in them! What’s that all about? Thank you so much for all your support and encouragement! You’ve helped me organize my kitchen cabinets, tiny linen closet, bathroom and bedroom closet! I can’t believe how much room I have now!

Please think about donating your no-longer-needed/wanted) sheets, towels, blankets, comforters to your local animal rescue center. They always need them and you get a tax write off – and extra room in your linen closet. Everybody wins!

What a great blog about hoarders. I’m not the worst hoarder, but I rank up there. Please do more like this! Your comments make so much sense and make it easier for folks like me to unload!
Buh-bye, extra towels, sheets and comforters!

Your local veterinarian can always use old towels. They use them in crates to lay animals after surgeries.
