by doitonadimeblog Filed Under: Dollar Tree, Organization

Welcome to my NEW corner of the web!  Doitonadimeblog.com!  I’m thrilled to have this (much more official) space for a new year of videos, organizing, and frugal living.  YAY! 🙂

I wanted to kick it off right with a Dollar Tree Giveaway for you guys and an exciting announcement about the month of January:  I AM GOING TO BE POSTING A NEW ORGANIZING VLOG TWICE A WEEK FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH!

I want to help you, inspire you, and encourage you to get organized this year.  Expect videos seeing organized spaces, new tips, tricks, and solutions (all on a budget), and motivation videos to get you on your way.  Still same old me.  Real systems that actually work for this busy people.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

For those of you wondering about the blog, that’s a huge thanks my friend Rachel (The Patriot Nurse) for snagging the domain name for me.  She did this way long ago, even before I was a blogger, because she wanted to pay it forward.  Yes, amazing kindness and people like this still exist 🙂  Also thanks to my husband for helping me with my logo and his techy-skills to make this transfer happen.

A giant hug to all of YOU, who follow my youtube, my blog, write me kind messages, and make this a genuine community.  I appreciate each and every one of you! <3  Let’s do this thing!

Well I made myself a card keeper so I can make and send my cards on time for once, But I’d also like to get my cupboards and pantry more organized. Like those large appliances you don’t want on your counter tops, etc…and my pull out pantry drawers aren’t organized the best they could be. Frying pan, pots and pans, that just isn’t working for me either. lol And spices, I have a spice carousel but it doesn’t hold enough spices so I have them sitting in the cupboard in my way. We used to have a spice wire rack that hung on the cupboard for about 18 years, but I got tired of the door not closing all the way because someone didn’t put a spice bottle back in the right spot. Yes, I need help, lots of it! lol Thanks, I looks forward to organizing videos!!!

Homeschool/art supplies. We don’t have a separate room or even a closet to put all our stuff in. I have a middle schooler so we don’t have lots of the educational toys like when she was younger but we do have books, science stuff, maps, etc. She is also very much into doing crafts and hands on projects so we have a lot of supplies (paint, glue, clay, markers/crayons etc.) and a variety of folders, paper, card stock, index cards, etc. for different projects. I have a bookcase in one of the living areas and two rolling carts that are supposed to be for craft supplies in the dining room where we do school/crafts but it’s all a huge mess.

I would like ideas for organizing office/paperwork. Also, how to organize the to do ideas, ie: recipes to try, projects to start, things to do and books/movies to read or see, without having little scraps of papers everywhere to try and remind me of these things I would like to accomplish. The main challenge is only having a very small space to do all this in.

I just moved in with my fiance a few months ago and he loves to play video game, thankfully the joysticks are wireless, so it’s not a bigger mess, but they take a lot of space under the tv, and it doesn’t look very nice. So, ideas to organize the tv area and make it more adult, even with a lot of video games around. 😉

I live in a townhouse, vintage 1974, so closet space is a commodity here. My one hall closet is a mess with sheets, towels, kitchen items that don’t fit in my kitchen, office supplies and items from my couponing hauls. Wire shelving is all I have, tips for how to organize it without making me go any nuttier than I am would be fantastic. 🙂

I have a dollar tree 10 mins from me and your videos give me inspiration to work on my clutter, especially since I have has a problem with it all my life. Plus your Goodwill Hauls entertain me too.

Thank you for doing this give away. I am so excited that you opened this up to outside US residents. March 2014 I started thinking about how I can better organize my home on a small budget. I came across one of your videos and I’ve been hooked ever since . Dollar tree is relatively new in Canada but I had been to a couple of stores in the Us. My mom introduced me to DT and she is in love with the store. By watching your videos I actually had an idea of what to look for and try out ideas . So I’m trying to organize my whole condo and am slowly getting there . My next big project is my laundry room / storage room. I have tried to organize there b4 by buying DT bins/baskets but the set up is not working out. I need to take out the shelves and start by putting shelves on the wall as well as on the ground . This space is not very big do I have to be creative ! Thank you for all that you do! I have used many of your ideas through out my home and am constantly try to make ideas work for me . I recently lost a pet and did not have any motivation to be here on YouTube. But I think I’m ready now! Thanks again,

A few months ago, inspired by you and some DT purchases I organized our downstairs bathroom closet, which actually kind of functions more as a utility closet because really only guests use it and we don’t have to store much “bathroom stuff” there. I’m happy to report that it is still mostly organized. My next big project is the extra closet in the laundry room. I’m hoping to have a couple shelves to organize games and puzzles and most of the remaining shelves to organize my “crafty” stuff (I expect that to be the hardest to organize and probably to become disorganized again rather quickly). The closet has a large area in the bottom that I would like to store the stroller and our outside toys in since the closet is right next to our back door and we don’t have a ton of garage space for that kind of thing. Any tips for doing multiple venues in one space would be great. Thanks!

I am hooked on your videos and LOVE the information that you share. I would love to get some ideas on organizing a classroom, I am not a teacher but I have 3 developmentally delayed children that are elementary school age and I need some ideas for storing all of our homework supplies and games. example: Learning games, ( I make what I call homework folders out of manilla file folders so the kids that I am not currently working one on one with can still be learning and practicing) and items like markers, pencils, activity books etc. We work hard every day but I feel if I had more organization it would make life easier. Thanks so much!

LOVE the new blog! It’s so pretty!!!!! 🙂

I can’t wait to see your new videos. I bet they will be awesome, as always! 🙂

My best friend helped me kickstart my whole house cleaning and organizing efforts a week before Christmas. Best present ever! I owe her big time!

Right now, I’d say my biggest problem areas are my kitchen cabinets, my son’s room, and my closets. The hall closet is fine now–I just cleaned it out and reorganized it a few days ago–but I still need to tackle the coat closet and my bedroom closets. I’ve designated one of them as my “office” closet, and it needs A LOT of work! Some new storage solutions are definitely in order–and this time, they need to be the right ones. (Long story.)

I don’t do Twitter or Instagram, but I’ll be happy to spread the word about you on my own blog! Good luck to everyone who has entered! 🙂

I have 2 areas I plan to organize in the month of January. The first area will be my attic. I need to go through plastic bins, donate, throw away and consolidate items. After I pack up my Christmas items it seems like the perfect time to do that. The second place is in my basement under my stairs. It’s blocked by a big shelving unit that blocks the entrance. I’ll need to take the stuff off the shelf, move the shelf and then go through things that have been stored there for YEARS! I’m not excited for that project! If you have any helpful hints on either organizational project, I’d be very gratefulness! Thank you and HAPPY NEW YEAR!,,

Love your video and blog. My biggest need is organizing all of my bits of paper.

When I need to prioritize tasks and goals, I grab a piece of paper and start todo lists, often, on bits of paper or index cards. (At least index cards are all one size.) I rarely manage to finish the lists, so the scraps don’t get thrown away, and eventually they get covered up by other papers on my desktop. After they’re stale, I seem to not even SEE them. So I start new lists. Every now and then I clear out the stacks and find a variety of old lists.

I’ve seen and read of a lot of different methods thru the years to get my todo lists organized, both online and on paper, and have used a lot of methods. But so far I’ve not managed to stick with one system that works, other than in small compartments of my life.

[ Google plus will not work with my computer or Youtube won’t let me comment. I saw someone ask about Legos driving them crazy… maybe you can pass this on. ]

Having lived through the Lego Wars for some years, as we called it, I want to pass on what worked for me and friends at those ages. Maybe you could pass it on to her or include it as an idea if you do a video on organizing Legos and Playmobile and building-type toys.

Bring the Legos into their rooms if possible, not in public areas of the house where they are spread all over to be walked on or vacuumed up, and where you HAVE to nag them to have them picked up to clean or use the spaces for other purposes.

Larger shallow Underbed bins for the Legos allow the kid to open one bin, dig through and access a subset of the parts — enough for variety — and are easily picked up and slid back under the bed. We had bins for each type of building toy. Several were full of Legos.

[ We did not try to keep them sorted by the Legos set. Eventually, if they want to sell them, they’re most often sold by volume. What we saw was that as soon as they followed the instructions and assembled the set, most of them immediately started modifying the piece to make some wonderful new creation, using parts from other sets. To me, this is part of the beauty of Legos. But your kid may be different – one of his friends was a collector. ]

We didn’t see my kid or any friends dump the bins out on the floor; it was easy to dig through the parts and find what they need. And easy to get the parts back into the big flat bins with just a dustpan. Pickup made easy meant no fighting about having to do it.

A small 2×2 Lego table with a small bin in the bedroom provided a work center for my kid and his friends, and kept almost all the Legos up off the floor all the time. It had a small bucket for Legos in the center, and a work surface of Legos.

But another friend did not have a table — the kids played out on the floor or bed, and that was more to pick up, but the underbed bins still made it relatively easy for kids to do. Most pieces stayed inside the bins.

[I guess this is assuming there are not a whole bunch of other toys, clothes and chaos built up out on the bedroom or playroom floor that goes beyond Legos. Kids need ROOM to play. My son was always so grateful when I helped him organize his room, so he had room to play, so the room fit his developmental needs. I am NOT born organized by any means, and my parents never taught me to declutter. But he learned to declutter and organize by working peacefully alongside me, without upsets, and not too long for a kid’s tolerance at one time. (We set the timer and he knew when it was over it was over for that session.) Today, he organizes and declutters voluntarily. In fact, if we had a behaviour problem, where he just didn’t seem able to follow limits, many times it was associated with the environment being just wrong for his new needs to grow and work. Reorganizing his space fixed the problems. ]

I’ve seen huge “Legos pits” built into playrooms. What I found was that a much smaller subset of pieces is really all they work with at any time for almost all creative building. The underbed bins provide secondary storage. Every now and then, the Legos can be swapped out. Or frequently, the kids would slide an underbed bin out, take the top off, dig through and grab certain pieces, but they just did not dump the shallow bins out and all over the floor. (Other kids may behave differently.)

Legos always enabled hours of quiet independent creative play, and I think they helped develop excellent fine motor skills, and visual discernment and pattern-matching. (I hope that is what it’s called. I am not a trained teacher but have taught courses using Legos at our homeschool co-op, and noticed that the kids who did not play with Legos at home due to a parent worrying about younger children with small parts – those kids struggled with being able to match up the visual picture of a part with the selection of Legos a lot more than other kids.)

Some kids, especially the collectors like shelves for displaying their creations. Some will be satisfied with taking and posting a photograph of some creations.

Some kids will be taking their creations around the house with them, and setting them down, but this will at least be a smaller subset. Add a daily step to the routines at a standard time, “Lego Cop,” or “Garage the Legos,” or some other name, to get all the Legos back to their home.

    HTH. No more Lego Wars!
